The territory was inhabited by Totonac and Huastec cultures between 800 and 1300 AD, leaving traces of their presence along the river. Archaeologists have discovered ancient altars that reveal how these early civilizations used the land.
Indigenous languages remain strong in the municipality, with over 10,000 residents speaking primarily Nahuatl among the total population.
The area has good infrastructure with numerous schools and educational facilities serving different age groups. Visitors can easily find services and basic amenities typically found in a municipal center.
In 2021, archaeologists uncovered a 500-year-old limestone sculpture of a woman wearing an elaborate headdress in a local citrus orchard. This discovery provides insight into the artistic traditions of the region before colonial times.
