Ciudad Valles, Agricultural center in San Luis Potosí, Mexico.
Ciudad Valles is a town on the banks of the Tampaon in San Luis Potosí, stretching several kilometers along the river and combining farming with trade. The streets run through flat residential areas surrounded by sugarcane fields and citrus groves, while low buildings and market zones shape the townscape at the center.
Spanish settlers founded the settlement in the 16th century as a base to control trade routes between coast and highland. Over the centuries, the place grew through sugarcane farming and the expansion of rail and road links into a regional junction.
The name dates from Spanish colonial times and still reflects the close tie to Huastec culture, visible in handcrafts and local customs. Visitors often see the colorful dress of indigenous communities, especially at markets on the edge of town.
The humid climate brings warm to hot temperatures almost year-round, so light clothing and sun protection are advisable. The town sits on a main road running north to the coast and south inland, so travelers passing through often take a break here.
In the nearby mountains lie several waterfalls that are often reachable only by unpaved tracks or by boat. Some locals offer simple tours leading to spots where you can swim in the clear water.
