Camp Hudson, Military fort in Val Verde County, Texas, US.

Camp Hudson was a military fort in Val Verde County, Texas, located along San Pedro Creek, a tributary of the Devils River. The buildings used a mixture of gravel and lime for natural temperature control in the harsh landscape.

The fort was established in 1857 to protect wagon and stagecoach traffic along the San Antonio-El Paso Road. It served as a key stopping point between two larger military installations on a major trade corridor.

The fort housed soldiers who maintained order along a busy trade route, working to ensure safe passage for merchants and travelers moving between settlements across the region.

The fort is now an archaeological site with minimal visible structures, so learning about its layout beforehand helps visitors understand what they are seeing. Expect hot, dry conditions and bring appropriate sun protection.

In 1859, an experimental camel caravan from Camp Verde passed through as part of the unusual United States Camel Corps program. This rare event shows the different transport methods being tested during that era.
