Greater Austin is a metropolitan area in Central Texas that covers five counties and includes cities such as Round Rock, Georgetown, and Cedar Park. The entire region is home to approximately 2.3 million residents and forms a connected urban space together with the capital city of Austin.
The first settlers of the region were indigenous peoples before Spanish missionaries arrived in the 18th century and built initial European structures. After the Texas Revolution of 1835, urban expansion accelerated through railway construction and the founding of new towns throughout the territory.
Live music venues and recording studios shape the local cultural scene, earning the region its reputation as the Music Capital of the World. Food truck parks and outdoor breweries reflect a relaxed lifestyle where people gather to eat and socialize outside.
Several highways cross the metropolitan area and connect the different communities, with rush hour in the morning and evening causing delays. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is located to the southeast and serves as the main gateway for air travel to the entire region.
The Colorado River flows through the territory and forms a series of lakes known as the Highland Lakes, offering recreational opportunities just outside the city. These reservoirs were created by dam construction in the 1930s and 1940s and supply water to the growing population.
