Hancock Whitney Center, International Style skyscraper in New Orleans, United States
Hancock Whitney Center is a 51-story, 697-foot (212 m) tower at 701 Poydras Street, designed in the International style by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. Its structure uses a double tube system with a steel core and concrete perimeter, clad in Italian travertine and bronze glass. Offices fill the tower, with retail space at ground level.
Completed in 1972, the tower was the first skyscraper in the South to exceed 200 meters and held the title of tallest building in the Southeast until 1976, when Atlanta's Westin Peachtree Plaza surpassed it. It was renamed Hancock Whitney Center in 2018 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places the same year.
The tower's name changed in 2018, when Hancock Whitney Bank moved in and rebranded the former One Shell Square, though Shell remains the largest tenant by space. The building also appears as a central location in the film Parallels – Reise in neue Welten.
The tower fills the block bounded by Poydras Street, Carondelet Street, Perdido Street and St. Charles Avenue, so it can be circled on foot from any side. Retail space occupies the ground floor; the office floors above are leased to tenants and closed to visitors. The building has its own ZIP code, 70139.
