The New Orleans Marriott opened in 1975 at 555 Canal Street in the Central Business District, not in the French Quarter. Its 42 stories and 449 feet (137 m) make it the seventh tallest building in New Orleans. On March 14, 2015, FBI agents arrested millionaire Robert Durst while he was staying at the hotel.

The hotel's name ties it to the Marriott chain rather than to a local tradition, and its Canal Street address places it at the edge of the Central Business District, a block from the French Quarter.
