Gentilly, human settlement in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States of America

Gentilly is a residential neighborhood in New Orleans with tree-lined streets and mostly single-story homes built across different decades. The area features small businesses, community spaces, and a mix of residential blocks that create a lived-in, everyday feel throughout the district.

Gentilly grew in the early 1900s as a working-class neighborhood when families moved to this area north of the city center. Hurricane Katrina in 2005 caused severe damage, but the community has been working to rebuild and recover since then.

Gentilly developed as a neighborhood for working families and became an important African American community over decades. Walking through its streets today, you can see how residents continue to shape the local character through their homes and community spaces.

This neighborhood is best explored on foot or by car, as it is a residential area with limited public transit options but easy navigation on flat streets. Be prepared for everyday weather conditions and keep in mind you are walking through a real community where people live.

Gentilly was one of the first areas in New Orleans deliberately planned as affordable housing for Black workers and middle-class families. This makes it an important location for understanding how the city grew and how housing decisions shaped different neighborhoods.
