National Museum, National heritage museum in George Town, Cayman Islands
The National Museum occupies the oldest public building in the territory and features two permanent galleries covering history and nature. These are supplemented by three rotating exhibitions that regularly present new topics and collections.
The collection began with artifacts gathered by Ira Thompson starting in the 1930s, which the government acquired in 1979 to form the museum. These founding holdings remain the backbone of what is displayed today.
The galleries show how islanders have lived from the sea across generations and maintained their local traditions. You see old fishing tools, handicrafts, and personal objects that tell the story of daily life here.
The museum is open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM and Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM. It is located in central George Town and easy to reach on foot.
A standout feature is the three-dimensional bathymetric map that shows how deep the ocean is around the islands. This interactive display gives a tangible sense of the underwater geology.
