Laguna Sausalito, Artificial lagoon in Viña del Mar, Chile
Laguna Sausalito is an artificial water body located in the heart of Viña del Mar that was built to hold water for regional needs. The lagoon sits in the middle of the city and is surrounded by open space where locals and visitors walk, sit, and enjoy the outdoors.
The water reservoir was built in the late 1800s to supply water to vineyards that covered the area during that time. It received its current name in 1960 through a partnership agreement with a city in California.
The lagoon and surrounding stadium received their current name in 1960 following a sister city agreement with Sausalito, California.
The site is easy to reach on foot and sits right in the middle of the city where different neighborhoods meet. Visitors can come at any time to take a short walk or sit on a bench and watch the water.
The lagoon attracts different bird species throughout the year, which come to feed and nest along the shores. Local care for the water and surroundings helps keep it a suitable home for these animals.
