Pariacaca, Sacred mountain in Central Andes, Peru
The Pariacaca summit rises 5,750 meters above sea level, featuring steep cliffs, snow-covered slopes, and diverse geological formations in the Junín-Lima border region.
Canadian mountaineer Nicholas Royer vanished during his expedition to Pariacaca in 2004, marking a significant event in the mountain's climbing history.
The mountain name derives from Quechua terms meaning reddish rock, reflecting the indigenous languages and traditions of the Andean communities.
Climbing expeditions to Pariacaca require extensive preparation, high-altitude experience, and take place between April and October when weather conditions permit safe ascents.
The first documented climbs of Pariacaca occurred in 1936 and 1938 by T. Dodge, establishing initial routes on this challenging Andean peak.
