Lanús is a city in the southern Greater Buenos Aires area in Argentina, covering a densely built zone of 48 square kilometers (19 square miles). The municipality is home to more than 450,000 inhabitants and borders directly onto the capital.
The place was formerly called Villa General Paz and received its current name in 1955 after French settler Anacarsis Lanús, who owned these lands until 1887. This change marked the transition from a rural settlement to a densely populated urban area.
