Thirteen women pledged ten cents in monthly dues and a donated book each when the reading room opened in 1894; they formed the Lemon City Library Association on February 4, 1902, and raised $683.46 in three years for the first dedicated building. Popular borrowings included Ben-Hur, Ramona and The Farmer's Almanac.
