Spanish Coquina Quarries, Historic quarries in Anastasia State Park, Florida.
The Spanish Coquina Quarries contain sixteen separate excavation sites where limestone composed of shell fragments and sand was extracted for construction materials.
Spanish colonists established these quarries in the late 17th century to source building materials for the Castillo de San Marcos and other structures in St. Augustine.
The quarries represent the intersection of Spanish colonial engineering and Florida's natural resources, influencing architectural development throughout the region.
Visitors can access the quarries daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM through Anastasia State Park, located at 1340-A State Road A1A South in St. Augustine Beach.
The extracted coquina stone hardens upon exposure to air, creating a durable building material that withstood numerous military attacks throughout history.
