Xavier Lopez House, Historic house in St. Augustine, Florida, United States
The Xavier Lopez House is a residential building from the early 1900s featuring Queen Anne architecture in St. Augustine. The detailed woodwork comes from a local planning mill in the area, giving the structure its distinctive handcrafted character.
The house was built in 1903 and named after Xavier Lopez, a merchant from a pioneer Minorcan family in the area. Carpenters William Fishwick and K. McKinnon constructed the building with their craftsmanship.
The house shows the variety of styles that existed in St. Augustine before the city focused on Spanish Colonial preservation. Walking through the neighborhood, you notice how different this Queen Anne design stands from the older colonial structures around it.
The building was moved to its current location from King Street in 1979 during urban changes. Like many historic structures in town, it sits slightly away from the main thoroughfares, so plan your walking route accordingly.
Many Queen Anne homes in St. Augustine were lost to fire or demolition during the 1950s and 1960s, making this one especially valuable today. It stands as one of the few surviving examples of this building style in the downtown area.
