Riverside High School, School in Jacksonville, Florida
Riverside High School is a public secondary school in Jacksonville, Florida, serving students in grades 9 through 12. The building has a beige brick exterior and a large interior courtyard, set within the tree-lined neighborhoods of Riverside and Avondale.
The school was founded in 1928 and originally named after a Confederate general. In 2021, it was renamed Riverside High School as part of a broader effort to remove Confederate symbols from public institutions across the city.
The school takes its name from the nearby St. Johns River and sits at the heart of the Riverside and Avondale neighborhoods. The central courtyard is where students naturally gather between classes, giving the campus a social energy that feels rooted in the local community.
The campus is in a residential neighborhood and can be reached by car or public transport, with street parking nearby. Access to the grounds is restricted during school hours, so visitors should plan their visit outside of those times.
Lynyrd Skynyrd, the rock band behind songs like Sweet Home Alabama, was formed by students who met at this school. A fire in the late 1980s damaged parts of the building, after which the campus was rebuilt and expanded with new classrooms.
