Omni Coliseum, Indoor sports arena in Atlanta, USA
The Omni Coliseum was a multi-purpose arena in Atlanta with seating for around 16,000 visitors. The building featured a distinctive steel framework roof and spanned over 370,000 square feet, providing space for basketball, ice hockey, concerts, and major events.
The building opened in 1972 and served as the home for the local Hawks basketball team and the Flames ice hockey team. After more than two decades of operation, the Coliseum was demolished in 1997, marking the end of an era for the city.
The venue hosted major entertainment events where artists like Elvis Presley and Madonna performed before large crowds. Wrestling fans regularly gathered here for local championship matches, making it a significant gathering place for the community.
The building was located within the CNN Center complex and was easily accessible for various events. Visitors should note that the Coliseum no longer exists and remains only as a memory of Atlanta's sports history.
The building was constructed with Cor-Ten steel, a material designed to form a protective surface through controlled rusting. However, Atlanta's humid climate prevented this special feature from working as intended.
