Charleston Light

Charleston Light is a modern lighthouse on Sullivan's Island featuring a triangular steel frame covered with aluminum alloy skin that stands 43 meters tall. The structure can be viewed and photographed from multiple public access areas nearby, making it accessible for visitors to experience from various angles.

The lighthouse was built in 1962 by the Federal Government to replace the Morris Island Light, which faced significant erosion problems at its original location. This newer structure marked the transition to modern lighthouse technology on the Charleston coast.

The lighthouse's black and white paint scheme has become a recognizable symbol along the coast, and locals often gather nearby for evening strolls. This color choice reflects community preferences that evolved over time, shaping how people connect with this waterfront landmark.

The lighthouse is located near public beach access points and can be photographed from several viewing areas around the island. Visitors should be prepared for changing coastal weather and wear comfortable shoes for walking along the waterfront paths.

The lighthouse includes an elevator and air conditioning system, making it unusually modern for a US lighthouse and quite different from traditional designs. These practical features make visiting considerably more comfortable than in older lighthouse structures.
