El Sereno Open Space

El Sereno Open Space is a protected area covering roughly 1,600 acres in the Santa Cruz Mountains with about seven miles of trails. The landscape shifts between chaparral brush, open meadows, and riparian zones alongside creeks.

The land was acquired in 1975 when the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District purchased it to protect the natural landscape near Los Gatos. This purchase was a significant milestone in regional efforts to conserve open spaces throughout the area.

A memorial bench along Aquinas Trail honors State Senator Jim Beall's work in protecting the Santa Cruz Mountains. The site reflects how local leaders expressed their commitment to preserving nature for the community.

The main trailhead has a small parking area with six spaces, and additional spots are available along Montevina Road nearby. Access requires a simple no-fee permit that is straightforward to obtain in advance or upon arrival.

Two fault zones run beneath the terrain of this protected area, shaping its geological character. The northern slope of the mountain is also where San Tomas Aquino Creek originates, making the site hydrologically significant.
