Forbes Mill

Forbes Mill is a two-story stone structure with a preserved annex near Los Gatos Creek that reflects early American architecture in California. The building was constructed to process grain from farms and served as a vital facility for agricultural production in the region south of San Jose.

James Alexander Forbes built this mill between 1852 and 1854 as a grain processing facility to serve farms south of San Jose. The structure became central to the region's development and eventually gave its name to the settlement that would become Los Gatos.

The mill marks a turning point when land ownership shifted from Mexican Californio families to American settlers in the years following conflict between the two nations. Walking through the space today, you sense how this transition shaped the community that grew around it.

The site provides wheelchair access throughout its facilities and features regular exhibitions about local history. Visitors will find clear signage and helpful staff who can answer questions about the building's past and its role in the community.

The settlement that grew around the mill was first called Forbes Mill, then Forbestown, before eventually becoming the present-day town of Los Gatos. This progression shows how a single building shaped the identity of an entire community.
