Forbes Mill stands as a two-story stone structure with a preserved annex near Los Gatos Creek, reflecting early California architecture.
James Alexander Forbes constructed this mill between 1852 and 1854, establishing a grain processing facility to serve farms south of San Jose.
The mill represents the transition of land ownership from Mexican Californios to new settlers following the Mexican-American War in California.
The Forbes Mill Museum maintains regular exhibitions of local history and provides wheelchair access for all visitors throughout its facilities.
The surrounding settlement, initially called Forbes Mill, then Forbestown, eventually became the present-day town of Los Gatos.
