Ohlone College, community college in California
Ohlone College is a public community college with two campuses located near Fremont and Newark in California. The main campus includes classrooms, laboratories, a theater, and technology centers, while the second site focuses on health sciences and technical training.
The college was founded in 1965 to meet local educational needs as part of California's public higher education system. A second campus opened in Newark in 2008, broadening the range of programs available to students across the area.
The college takes its name from the Ohlone people, the original inhabitants of this region, and that connection is openly acknowledged on campus. Day-to-day life here brings together people from many different backgrounds, and it is common to hear several languages spoken around the courtyards and common areas.
Both campuses are easy to reach by public transportation from different parts of the Bay Area. For those who drive, parking is available on site, and a small cafe on the main campus serves snacks and drinks during the day.
Since 1972, the college has run a program training people to work with deaf and hard of hearing individuals, one of the few of its kind in Northern California. This long-running focus on sign language and deaf education draws students specifically for that specialty from across the region.
