Touro University California, Graduate health sciences school in Vallejo, California
Touro University California is a private health sciences school located on Mare Island in Vallejo. The campus spans 44 acres with 23 buildings, including renovated naval quarters from the 1930s that now serve as educational spaces.
The institution was founded in 1997 in San Francisco as a Jewish-sponsored university before moving to Mare Island. The island itself was once the first permanent U.S. Navy installation on the West Coast.
The campus hosts celebrations honoring diverse traditions, including Filipino heritage and Dia de Los Muertos, which draw students from many backgrounds. These events shape how the community gathers and reinforces bonds between people studying health sciences together.
The campus is accessible by public transit and provides parking for visitors. The buildings are largely walkable, though some routes cross between older naval structures and newer facilities spread across the grounds.
The College of Osteopathic Medicine is California's second osteopathic medical program and incorporates point-of-care ultrasound probes into its training. This allows students to learn advanced diagnostic techniques earlier in their education than is typical elsewhere.
