The Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet maintains a collection of merchant vessels in a regulated navigation zone measuring 4.5 miles long and half a mile wide.
The fleet reached its maximum capacity in 1950 with 2,277 vessels, serving as a strategic maritime resource following World War II operations that began in 1946.
The fleet represents American naval preparedness, maintaining ships ready for activation during military emergencies, international crises, or humanitarian missions.
The Maritime Administration oversees seven vessels in 2024, conducting regular maintenance procedures and environmental compliance checks to prevent contamination of the surrounding waters.
The facility remains the sole National Defense Reserve Fleet location on the western coast of the United States, storing both military and commercial vessels.
