Putah Creek, River in Yolo and Solano Counties, United States.
Putah Creek is a river in Northern California that flows for about 70 miles through two counties. It originates in the Mayacamas Mountains and eventually merges with the Sacramento River through the Yolo Bypass.
The creek's name came from 'Arroyo de los Putos' in 1844. Scholars believe it may derive from a Lake Miwok word meaning grassy creek.
The local Patwin people called this waterway 'Liwaito' long ago. Today it remains important to the region's cultural identity and local storytelling.
Lake Solano Park sits along the waterway and offers camping facilities on a first-come basis. Visitors can stay overnight with basic amenities available at the site.
A 2000 agreement requires water from an upstream dam to flow regularly into the creek. This happened after severe droughts during the 1980s nearly dried up the entire waterway.
