Napa Sonoma Marsh, Wetland ecosystem in San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge, California.

Napa Sonoma Marsh is a coastal wetland on the northern shore of San Pablo Bay, made up of tidal channels, mudflats, and salt basins. It sits on the border between Napa and Sonoma counties in northern California.

Large parts of the wetland were drained for farming in the 1850s and later turned into salt production operations. From the 1980s onward, government agencies and conservation groups began working to bring back the original tidal conditions.

The marsh is a well-known spot for birdwatching, as many migratory birds stop here to rest or spend the winter. Walking along the levee trails, visitors can see pelicans, herons, and ducks at close range.

Levee trails allow exploration on foot or by bike, though light footwear is not suitable when conditions are wet. The area is open year-round, but spring and fall bring the greatest number of birds.

Some of the former salt ponds were deliberately left as shallow open water rather than fully restored to tidal marsh, because that setup turns out to suit certain shorebirds better. These ponds are clearly visible from the levee trails and offer a surprising look at how restoration work involves real tradeoffs.
