Eden Landing Ecological Reserve, Nature reserve in Hayward, United States
Eden Landing Ecological Reserve is a nature reserve featuring restored salt ponds and marshlands that line the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. The site spans extensive wetlands now home to herons, gulls, and migratory birds.
The area was once home to the Ohlone people before becoming salt production sites in the 1800s. The Oliver Salt Company operated salt-making facilities here from 1854 until 2003, after which restoration efforts began.
Native American Ohlone groups inhabited this territory before it transformed into salt harvesting ponds during the late nineteenth century.
Visitors can walk four miles of trails and observe wildlife from designated viewing points throughout the property. Kayak launching is available at Mount Eden Creek for those wanting to explore by water.
Concrete foundations and earthen dikes from the old salt works remain visible throughout the reserve. These remnants allow visitors to trace how the landscape shifted from industrial salt harvesting to restored natural habitat.
