Fremont Weir Wildlife Area

Fremont Weir Wildlife Area is a protected site covering roughly 1,500 acres of wetland habitat along the Sacramento River. The landscape is dominated by valley oaks, willows, and cottonwood trees that create a natural corridor for wildlife movement.

The area received official protection status from California Fish and Game Commission in 1981. This designation reflected growing recognition of the need to safeguard critical riparian habitats along the Sacramento River.

Bird watchers and naturalists regularly observe over 150 bird species here and share their findings with local research initiatives. The site serves as a gathering place for people interested in understanding river ecosystems and the role wetlands play in supporting wildlife.

The main entrance is accessible from County Road 16 on the east side, while the west side offers a more informal entry without established facilities. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for uneven terrain since marked trails are limited.

When the Sacramento River rises during heavy flows, excess water spills over the weir into the Yolo Bypass, serving as nature's flood control system. This ingenious design protects downstream communities while allowing the river to function naturally during wet seasons.
