Coe Glacier, Mountain glacier in Mount Hood, Oregon

Description

Coe Glacier is a glacier on the northern slope of Mount Hood that covers a substantial area of ice and rock. Its surface flows downward through steep terrain and sits among some of the highest peaks in the Cascade Range.

History

The glacier formed during ice age periods and has shaped the north side of Mount Hood ever since. Over recent decades, its extent has reduced noticeably, showing shifts in mountain climate patterns.

Research teams regularly monitor Coe Glacier to study climate patterns and environmental changes in the Cascade Range mountain system.

Practical

The glacier is visible from nearby terrain and sits in a high alpine zone. Access is difficult and requires mountaineering skills and proper equipment for safe visits.

The glacier's moraines show clear marks of ice movement and document its history in stone and debris. These formations offer clues about the glacier's former size and help visitors understand climate change impacts.
