Mount Rainier National Park, National park in Pierce County, Washington, US

Mount Rainier National Park encompasses 236,381 acres of wilderness, featuring a 14,410-foot stratovolcano surrounded by valleys, waterfalls, and old-growth forests.

President William McKinley established Mount Rainier as the fourth national park of the United States on March 2, 1899, following John Muir's conservation campaign.

The mountain's original name comes from the Lushootseed language of Native American tribes who inhabited this land for thousands of years before European settlement.

Visitors must carry tire chains from November through May, as winter conditions frequently affect road access and safety throughout the park's elevated areas.

The park contains Carbon Glacier and Emmons Glacier, which represent the largest glaciers by volume and area respectively in the contiguous United States.
