Discovery Islands, Coastal archipelago in British Columbia, Canada
The Discovery Islands are an archipelago lying between Vancouver Island and mainland British Columbia, spanning numerous islands of varying sizes. The waters between them shift from calm anchorages to strong currents, while the coastlines feature dense forests, rocky shores, and sheltered coves.
Indigenous peoples, especially the Kwakwaka'wakw, thrived here for over a thousand years, using the rich fishing grounds and resources throughout the chain. European contact arrived later and transformed the lives of these established communities.
The islands have long been home to Kwakwaka'wakw and other First Nations peoples who built villages and fishing camps along the shorelines. Today you can still sense these cultural roots through old settlement sites and stories shared by residents.
Getting around requires ferries or private boats, with BC Ferries providing regular service to Quadra Island from Campbell River. For smaller islands and more remote areas, water taxis or private vessels become necessary since ferry service is infrequent or unavailable.
Read Island has a floating post office at Surge Narrows where mail and parcels are handed directly from boats to residents. This unusual system has served the scattered community for decades and remains one of the last water-based postal stations in the world.
