Belfair, Census-designated place in Mason County, United States
Belfair is a census-designated place in Mason County situated on an isthmus that connects two peninsulas, with the Union River flowing into Hood Canal. The community's geography centers on this waterway junction and the low-lying terrain characteristic of the region.
The area was originally called Clifton before being renamed in 1925 to prevent confusion with other communities bearing the same name. This change occurred when the postmaster sought a distinctive name to clarify local mail delivery.
The name reflects a choice made in 1925 by the local postmaster, who selected it from a book to distinguish the community. Today, the annual Taste of Hood Canal Festival in August draws visitors to experience local food producers and artisans.
State Route 3 provides the main highway access, running north toward Bremerton and south toward Allyn through the community. Exploring the area is most practical by car, as locations are spread across a fairly wide geography.
The Theler Wetlands preserve covers approximately 135 acres of tidal habitat with boardwalk trails offering close views of where the river meets the canal. This protected area lets visitors witness the interaction between freshwater and saltwater ecosystems firsthand.
