Garibaldi Provincial Park, Provincial park in British Columbia, Canada
Garibaldi Provincial Park extends across 1,950 square kilometers of mountains, forests, glaciers, alpine meadows, and lakes in the Coast Mountains north of Vancouver.
The park received its name from Mount Garibaldi, which Captain George Henry Richards named after Italian general Giuseppe Garibaldi during a survey in 1860.
The Squamish people call Mount Garibaldi 'Nch'ḵay̓', meaning 'Dirty Place', referring to the muddy waters of the Cheekye River and use the area for hunting.
The park maintains five access points from the Sea to Sky Highway, with designated campgrounds requiring advance reservations and facilities for hiking, skiing, and mountaineering activities.
The Barrier, a natural lava dam containing Garibaldi Lake, experienced a partial collapse in 1855, which led to declarations of unsafe habitation zones in the 1970s.
