Mountain Home Demonstration State Forest, State demonstration forest in Tulare County, California, US.
Mountain Home Demonstration State Forest is a state forest in the Sierra Nevada featuring over 4,500 giant sequoias, some reaching heights above 240 feet (73 m) with diameters over 27 feet (8 m). The forest covers 5,000 acres (2,000 hectares) and provides camping areas, trails, and access to surrounding wilderness regions.
California purchased this land from a logging company in 1946 to protect the old-growth sequoias from further cutting. This acquisition marked a significant effort to preserve one of the state's most important forest ecosystems.
The Sunset Point archaeological site contains rock basins and depressions in granite, showing that Native American people lived here around 8,000 years ago. These marks are scattered throughout the forest floor where you can see them during walks.
The forest has five campgrounds with over 95 individual campsites for visitors planning overnight stays. Trails connect to nearby wilderness areas and neighboring national parks in the mountain region.
Three of the largest giant sequoias in the world, called Adam, Euclid, and Genesis, stand within this forest. These trees draw botanical researchers who study how such massive organisms survive and grow.
