LORAN-C transmitter Searchlight, Radio navigation transmitter near Searchlight, Nevada, United States
The LORAN-C transmitter station Searchlight consisted of four transmission towers spreading across desert grounds in Nevada, broadcasting navigation signals for ships and aircraft. The facility operated at 540 kilowatts of power and stood roughly 13.5 miles south of the town of Searchlight.
The facility was built in 1976 and operated until 2010 as a secondary station for two different LORAN chains. It supported navigation networks serving the US West Coast and south central regions throughout its more than three decades of service.
The facility represented a milestone in maritime navigation technology, employing Coast Guard personnel who maintained continuous transmission operations throughout its service period.
The site sits in open desert and is visible from the road, but visitor access is limited as the facility sits within a restricted area. The best way to experience it is from a distance, where the tower structures can be seen clearly against the sky.
The station simultaneously served two completely separate navigation chains through independent timing systems that shared a common atomic frequency standard. This dual function allowed one location to cover navigation needs across two different geographic regions.
