Owyhee County, Administrative county in southwestern Idaho, United States
Owyhee County extends across 7,697 square miles of diverse terrain, including mountains, desert landscapes, and deep river canyons in southwestern Idaho.
The county, established in 1863 as the first county under Idaho Territory Legislature, moved its seat from Ruby City to Silver City before settling in Murphy.
Western Shoshone, Northern Paiute, and Bannock peoples inhabited this territory for generations before European settlers arrived in the nineteenth century.
The county maintains a network of highways connecting to neighboring regions while supporting agricultural activities, ranching operations, and outdoor recreational areas.
The name Owyhee derives from early Hawaiian trappers who explored this region during fur trading expeditions in the nineteenth century.
