Steptoe Valley, Basin in White Pine County and Elko County, United States
Steptoe Valley is a basin in northeastern Nevada situated between the Egan Range, Cherry Creek Range, and Schell Creek Range. The landscape is framed by these mountain ranges that form its natural borders.
Colonel Edward Steptoe explored the region in 1854 and gave it his name. The establishment of key transportation routes through Egan Canyon and Shellbourne Pass in the 1860s opened the valley for travel and commerce.
The valley connects small communities like Cherry Creek, McGill, and Ely along its length. These settlements shape daily life and local identity across the region.
The area sits at an elevation of about 2200 meters, so visitors should expect thinner air and adjust activities accordingly. Taking time to acclimate before strenuous outdoor pursuits helps prevent altitude-related discomfort.
The valley contains two distinct parks with different purposes: Ward Charcoal Ovens and Cave Lake. These destinations showcase very different aspects of what the region has to offer to visitors.
