Castle of Thiers-sur-Thève

The Castle of Thiers-sur-Thève is a Gothic ruin built on a square plan with nine circular towers positioned along its perimeter. The complex includes a large residential hall with broad windows that reflect the building style of medieval Île-de-France.

This fortress was built in the mid-13th century by Thibault de Beaumont-Gâtinais and his wife Jeanne. It suffered major damage in the 14th century and was partially dismantled in the 15th century, leaving only the ruins that stand today.

The large windows in the great hall show how medieval nobles lived and arranged their spaces in this region. The way these windows are positioned reveals what mattered in daily life within a castle of this era.

The site is located in the town center and is freely accessible, allowing visitors to explore the ruins from the outside. A visit works well any time of year, though the ground among the stones is uneven and sturdy shoes are recommended.

Before its decline, this fortress served as a hunting retreat for the bishops of Beauvais, making it a place of leisure and authority. Today the massive towers and broken walls still speak to that legacy of power held by religious leaders in the region.
