Kennecott Smokestack, Industrial chimney in Salt Lake County, United States.
Kennecott Smokestack rises 370 meters high with a base diameter of 54 meters that tapers to 12 meters at the top. Inside, multiple levels and structures support its function as a discharge point for the adjacent copper smelting plant.
The structure was completed in 1974 as the region expanded its copper processing operations. Its construction reflected growing industrial demand and technological advances in smelting infrastructure during that era.
The chimney stands as a symbol of copper processing evolution in Utah and shows how the region's industrial methods changed over time. Walking near it, you can sense how this factory connected to the broader mining heritage of the West.
An internal elevator with a gear system runs from the base to the top and takes about 20 minutes to reach the summit. The structure is generally not open to the public, but you can view it from the surrounding industrial plant area.
Inside, smokestack gases containing about 40 percent sulfur dioxide are converted into sulfuric acid. This acid is then sold commercially while also preventing harmful pollutants from reaching the atmosphere.
