Saltair, Entertainment complex on Great Salt Lake, Utah, United States.
Saltair is an entertainment complex on the Great Salt Lake in Utah, featuring a main pavilion that extends out over the water. The structure is supported by a large number of steel pilings driven into the lake bottom.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints built the original Saltair in 1893 as a destination and connected it to Salt Lake City via a railway line. The resort was one of the first leisure destinations in the region.
The dance hall at Saltair drew thousands of people in the early 1900s who came for live performances and social events. The resort functioned as a gathering place where visitors experienced music and entertainment together.
The resort is located near Salt Lake City and allowed visitors to swim in highly saline water where people floated without effort. The strong salt concentration made swimming here different from other lakes.
Engineers used steam injection techniques to dissolve the lake bottom temporarily, allowing support posts to anchor in solidified sodium deposits. This method solved the challenge of building structures in such a unique body of water.
