Islands District, Administrative district in south-western Hong Kong.
Islands District is an administrative area in south-western Hong Kong spanning multiple islands south of the main territory. The area connects sparsely populated island communities with larger settlements on Lantau Island, where the international airport is also located.
The area was established as an administrative unit in the 1870s to better organize growing communities across the different islands. This early boundary-setting created the foundation for today's district structure.
The district preserves fishing and maritime customs that remain visible in local markets and seaside communities today. Island residents shape daily life around sea-oriented livelihoods and trading practices.
Visitors can move between islands using ferries and bus services on Lantau Island to reach various locations. Transportation is reliable but travel times between remote islands may be longer.
The international airport on Chek Lap Kok Island is built entirely on reclaimed land created for this purpose. This engineering solution connected the artificial airport island to Lantau Island through bridges and a tunnel.
