Renji Hospital operates through four campuses across Shanghai, maintaining 2,750 beds and employing 4,475 staff members including 631 senior academics.
Founded in 1844 by British missionary William Lockhart, this medical facility became the first western medicine hospital in Shanghai and received major funding from Henry Lester in 1927.
The hospital name changed multiple times, from Chinese Hospital to Lester Chinese Hospital, then to Gong Nong Bing Hospital during the Cultural Revolution before returning to Renji.
The medical center features 54 clinical departments, including gastroenterology, cardiology, neurosurgery, and operates research facilities with funding reaching 271 million RMB in 2021.
The institution maintains 146 doctoral supervisors and 177 master supervisors while managing the Shanghai Cancer Institute across its multiple locations.
