White Cloud Temple, Shanghai, Taoist temple in Huangpu District, Shanghai, China

The White Cloud Temple is a Taoist temple in Huangpu District organized along a north-south axis with five main halls arranged in sequence. The layout includes the Main Gate, Yuhuang Hall, Laolü Hall, Qiuzu Hall, and Sanqing Hall, each displaying traditional architectural features and serving different aspects of worship.

The temple was established in 1882 during China's period of transformation and represents the continuation of Taoist practice in modern Shanghai. It has undergone several renovations that preserved its traditional design while integrating architectural elements from different Chinese dynasties.

This temple functions as a center for the Quanzhen School of Taoism, where visitors encounter active spiritual practices and teachings focused on virtue, wellness, and longevity. The daily rituals and prayers create a living space where religious belief remains part of everyday life.

The temple operates daily with hours that change depending on the season, so it is good to check in advance. Photography is limited in worship areas, and visitors should ask for permission or look for posted signs indicating where cameras are welcome.

The Hall of the Three Pure Ones contains statues representing the origin of all beings, which form the core of Taoist belief and philosophy. Large copper incense burners crafted with care mark the entrances to different halls and help visitors navigate the space.
