Jibaozhai Museum, Museum in Erpu village, Jizhou, China.
Jibaozhai Museum was a large museum complex in Erpu village comprising twelve exhibition halls designed to display a collection of approximately 40,000 artifacts. The facility was built as an ambitious cultural institution intended to serve the local region.
The facility opened in 2010 during a period when many new museums were being established across China. Authorities permanently closed it in 2013 after investigations confirmed that the collection contained numerous counterfeit pieces.
The collection of 40,000 items included objects with modern cartoon characters presented as ancient artifacts, highlighting issues in cultural preservation.
The venue is no longer accessible to visitors as its operating license was permanently revoked. The closure followed discoveries of extensive forgeries throughout the collection.
A vessel on display was presented as an ancient artifact but featured modern simplified Chinese characters and contemporary design elements. The forgeries revealed a systematic practice affecting items throughout the entire collection.
