Villa Philmonte

Villa Philmonte is a large residence with Mission Revival architecture set in the mountains of northern New Mexico. The building features stucco walls, clay tile roofs, and several covered porches arranged around a central courtyard.

An oil magnate built this residence in 1926 to serve as his headquarters for managing a vast cattle operation in the uplands. He later donated the property to a major scouting organization for their use and stewardship.

The residence displays European and American furnishings from different eras that visitors encounter while walking through the rooms. The collection reflects how wealthy ranch owners of that period lived and decorated their homes.

The residence can be visited only through guided tours organized via a museum registration system. Visitors should plan ahead, as it is available for tours only during certain seasons.

The residence contains a special window added after its completion that frames a view of a distant natural rock formation. This window connects the architecture in a particular way to the surrounding landscape.
