Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge

Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge, National wildlife refuge in Colfax County, New Mexico.

Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge is a 3,700-acre protected area featuring shortgrass prairie, playa lakes, wetlands, and scattered woodlots in the high plains of northeastern New Mexico. The landscape shifts between open grasslands and patches of trees, interspersed with natural water sources.

The refuge was established in 1965 to protect and maintain the prairie ecosystems of the highland region. Its creation represented early efforts to preserve the area's endangered grassland habitats.

The refuge is a place where bird watchers and nature enthusiasts gather to observe migratory species and prairie residents. The landscape draws people interested in understanding how grassland ecosystems work and evolve.

A network of six miles of gravel roads cuts through the area, allowing visitors to explore the landscape slowly. The best times for viewing wildlife are during sunrise and sunset when activity peaks.

The area harbors more than 270 bird species, including rare shorebirds and raptors that circle above the grasslands. This high bird diversity makes it an important stopover and wintering ground for migratory flocks.
