The 3,700-acre refuge contains shortgrass prairie, playa lakes, wetlands, woodlots, and agricultural lands at an elevation of 6,050 feet.
The Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1965 to protect and maintain prairie ecosystems in northeastern New Mexico.
The refuge serves as a research center for prairie conservation, attracting scientists and naturalists who study native grassland species and migratory patterns.
Visitors can access six miles of gravel roads throughout the refuge, with optimal wildlife viewing times during sunrise and sunset hours.
The refuge documents 278 bird species, including Wilson's phalarope, American avocet, and various hawks that soar above the protected grasslands.
