Caribou Ranch Open Space Park, Natural park near Nederland, Colorado.
Caribou Ranch Open Space Park is a nature preserve near Nederland with meadows, forests, and wetlands in the montane zone. The land sits between 8,300 and 10,000 feet (2,530 to 3,050 m) in elevation and provides diverse habitats for various wildlife species.
The land was originally a mining area where the Blue Bird Mine extracted silver ore starting in the 1870s. The property was later converted into a protected open space to preserve the land and its natural resources.
A barn on the property was transformed into a recording studio during the 1970s where many musicians created their albums. The site became an important gathering place for artists and left a mark on the region's music history.
The park offers hiking trails and is open for horseback riding, though certain areas close from April through June for wildlife protection. Visitors should prepare for changing weather and mountainous terrain with appropriate hiking gear.
The park supports both American beaver and moose populations within the same protected area because of its varied elevations and diverse ecosystems. This unusual coexistence of species with different habitat needs reflects the site's ecological richness.
