Barr Trail, National Recreation Trail in Colorado, United States
Barr Trail is a hiking path in Colorado that climbs from Manitou Springs to the summit of Pikes Peak. The route winds through mountain terrain with many switchbacks and passes through different forest and alpine zones.
Fred Barr created this mountain path in 1918 as the first direct route between Manitou Springs and the peak. The trail quickly became the preferred hiking route for the region.
The trail designation as a National Recreation Trail reflects the strong outdoor recreation traditions of the Colorado mountain region.
Start your hike early in the morning and bring plenty of water for the entire journey. Conditions at the summit are significantly colder and windier than at the base.
The path includes more than a hundred switchbacks that structure the ascent in stages. These numerous curves allow hikers to tackle the steep slope gradually over time.
