Construction of Mount Rushmore, Sculpture in the United States of America
The construction of Mount Rushmore was a major project that carved four presidential heads into a mountainside. The memorial is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota and features four faces approximately 60 feet (18 meters) tall.
The project began in 1927 and was completed in 1941 using dynamite to remove rock from the mountain. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum directed the effort throughout these 14 years.
The monument displays four American presidents and represents national identity for many visitors. The carved faces dominate the landscape and serve as a focal point for understanding American leadership.
The site is easy to reach and offers viewing areas with clear sightlines to the monument. Visitors should know that daytime provides the best viewing conditions and that the grounds include parking and a visitor center.
The project was never fully finished, as Borglum died in 1941 before the final details could be completed. His son continued the work briefly, but the project ended soon after without achieving all original plans.
