Tinker Air Force Base, Military air base in Oklahoma City, United States
Tinker Air Force Base is a military installation in Oklahoma City that serves as one of the largest maintenance and repair centers for U.S. Air Force aircraft. The facility covers roughly nine square miles and houses workshops, hangars, and administrative buildings dedicated to servicing transport planes and refueling tankers.
The base opened in 1941 just before the United States entered World War II and supported the war effort by maintaining and repairing bomber aircraft. After the war ended, it grew into a permanent installation for logistics support and engineering operations.
The base received its name from Major General Clarence L. Tinker, the first Native American to reach the rank of major general in United States military history.
Access to the base is strictly controlled and limited to authorized personnel and visitors with prior clearance. Public areas or tours are typically not available unless during special events or official occasions.
A tornado in March 1948 destroyed or damaged dozens of parked aircraft on the tarmac, creating one of the worst weather-related incidents in military aviation facility history. The base recovered quickly and resumed operations without extended interruption.
