Oklahoma Natural Gas Company Building, commercieel gebouw in Oklahoma, Verenigde Staten van Amerika
The Oklahoma Natural Gas Company Building is a commercial structure located at 624 South Boston Avenue in Tulsa. Built around 1925 using reinforced concrete and buff-colored brick, it features limestone cladding on its lower two stories and is characterized by tall vertical piers extending from ground to roof with narrow windows set between them.
The building opened in 1928, just before the stock market crash that transformed America. Designed by Arthur M. Atkinson, it served as the main office for Oklahoma Natural Gas Company for more than 50 years until the company relocated, after which the structure changed ownership and underwent various modifications.
The building carries the name of the company that built it to house their gas distribution operations. It reflects how Tulsa's business leaders used distinctive architecture to display their wealth and importance to the growing city.
The building sits in downtown Tulsa and is easily accessible on foot while exploring the historic area. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 and is part of the Oil Capital Historic District, meaning its exterior is protected from major changes.
The building was one of the first in Tulsa to feature Art Deco design, and its straightforward approach to the style made this modern aesthetic more widely accepted for other buildings in the city. In the 1980s, demolition was planned to make way for a modern office tower, but utility company ONEOK chose to preserve and partially occupy it instead.
