Lhodrakarchu Monastery is a Buddhist Nyingmapa monastery in Bumthang District situated at 3,800 meters elevation, overlooking Jakar Dzong and the valley below. Its high position offers sweeping views across the surrounding mountains and the central Bhutan region.
Founded in 1234 by Lorepa, a Tibetan Drukpa Kagyupa lama, the monastery underwent multiple renovations led by prominent figures like Damcho Pekar. Its early establishment marks one of the longer Buddhist traditions in this region.
The monastery hosts the Telda Tshechu festival every four years, drawing monks, devotees, and visitors to observe traditional Buddhist ceremonies together. This gathering reveals how the site serves as a spiritual meeting point for the local community.
More than 250 monks reside at the monastery, which has ongoing construction projects supported by international and Bhutanese patrons since the 1980s. Visitors should note that the high elevation requires good fitness and appropriate clothing for the mountain climate.
